5.The Fall of Berlin Wall (1989)
After the second world war ended in Europe, which was on 30th of April 1947, the captured territories of Germany was divided between the four allied powers US, UK, Russia and France (Even though captured early in the war, the people of France played a vital part in allied victory). The line was drew in Berlin. The city itself was divided into four. In the aspects that Russia is now a communist country (they were before the war even began), the rift of idealism between her and her allies was drifting apart. With many of the Eastern Bloc countries had joined the Soviets communism, the western bloc sees them as a threat. The Soviet leader then Joseph Stalin, was trying to spread the influence of communism to the western bloc.
In 1947 just two years after the end of the second world war, the cold war erupted. As the communist had been a tough idealism to follow, many of the Russian side of Berlin people, fled to the west. Not liking the situation, the Soviets build a wall along the lines of their territory in Berlin, to prevent the people from crossing over to the western side. In 1961 the wall was erected. They also set up soldier post to prevent anyone from climbing over. Throughout the years it had stood, many easterners had tried to escape, though few managed to succeed, many were killed or arrested.

For
Europe, the wall was a symbol, of the division of the Western and the
Eastern Bloc, whereas in Berlin and Germany, it was a separation
of their country, their city. Separated from friends and family. The
pain of the Berlin people, was agonizing. They could not cross the
border, because of the guards placed on the Eastern side of the wall
(none was mentioned about the western side. The western side Berliners
was always on the look out, for if any easterners was trying to escape,
they would hop on to try and help them.
What's left of the wall today |
On the 12th of June 1987, the US president Ronald Reagan (for whatever reasons the US has in mind, you can't deny sometimes truth prevails), challenged the General Secretary of Soviet Union's Communist Party, Mr. Mikail Gorbachev to tear down the wall which in from his speech derived the famous phrase, "Mr. Goberchev, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!" As Gorbachev claimed that the standard of freedom had increase in the Eastern Bloc. 2 years later, on November 9th, 1989, The administration of the GDR (East Germany), under the influence that the Soviet power is declining, declared that it's borders would be opened to all. Thousands of East Berliners were gathered at the wall, to cross over, joined on the other side by the westerners, who have long waited the return of friends, families and even lovers. At first, the guards was instructed to let only the people with passports to go through, but as they could not contain the eastern mob, that was getting hostile, they let them through. On 22 different location, the people of either side of Berlin, began to tear down the wall. It was a historical moment of reunion, of people from both side of the cities.
Even though the border of east and west was still
in affect, it was the start of the unification, not only in Berlin, but
also the whole of Germany. It must have been a wonderful sight then on
the 9 of November 1989, when a city separated for more then 28 years
came together, parents hugged their children with tears streaming down
their faces, cousin, aunties, uncles and friends seeing each other after
almost three decades of separation. Lovers kissed for they had only
dream of something like this to happen, saving their love till was
forbidden to them by the wall and what it represented. Many both eastern
and western Berliners, took part of the tear down of the wall, only
some remain of the wall is now kept, as a reminder of the terror that
they had suffered.
